Red Nile Tilapia , Oreochromis Niloticus , is a cichlid fish. Adults can grow to 15 inches in length and weigh up to 9 pounds! Tilapia have a lifespan of 9 years and can tolerate brackish water. The optimal water temp for this species is between 65 and 100 degrees, with cold spikes as low as 48 degrees. 

Tilapia are often used with aquaponics, which combines aquaculture with hydroponics. The plants and fish are raised together in a symbiotic environment. 

Tilapia are also used to serve as natural biological control of unwanted or invasive aquatic plants. Tilapia feed on a wide variety of plants and algae. Red Nile Tilapia are a great source of protein and are highly desired by fish markets.
